Edge Hill, Wimbledon
Client: The Society of Jesus
Authority: Merton
The Society of Jesus wanted to create a home for its retired Brothers and Fathers. It owned a large Victorian house which was considered to make a positive contribution to the Wimbledon West Conservation Area.
In order to secure conservation area consent for the demolition of the existing building, and planning permission for its replacement, we demonstrated to the London Borough of Merton that it was not possible to use the existing house, even in an extended way, for the proposed use.
Martin Ashley Architects met the challenge of designing a new building which complemented, and was sensitive to, the Grade II* Listed Sacred Heart Church opposite the site. The new building was completed in the summer of 2009.
